Five Dog Training Tips

Keep it Fun

Dogs learn faster when there having fun. If your dogs enjoying itself then the training is going well. Motivation is a key aspect to dog training. While your dog is having fun it’s motivated. Motivation is so important when training any dog. Its that motivation that separates great working dogs from the rest of the pack.

High Rate of Reinforcement

This means reward often, this mainly applies when new behaviours are first being taught. The rate of reinforcement to gradually be decreased as the behaviour becomes better understood. A high rate of reinforcement also helps to gain a dog with a good attitude towards working.

Consistency is Key

Always remember to be consistent if your consistent with your actions then your dog will be as well. A dog that’s consistent means a dog who responds to the same command in the same way every single time. A good way to keep consistent is a clicker as it always produces the same sound at the same volume every single time. Dogs love consistency and the more consistent you are the quicker your dog will learn. There's nothing worse than a confused dog that does not understand what's being asked of it.

Always Follow Through

If you ask your dog to do something then make the dog do it. Don’t keep repeating sit while the dog blankly stairs at you. If you have said sit and the dog is not immediately sitting then play with the dog and try again but do not just keep failing. If the dog knows what you want it will do it, make sure the dog understands what's being asked of it.

Don’t Push It

Make sure you don’t do to much to soon. I would not suggest teaching your dog more than one new behaviour per 48 hour period. If you teach too many things at the same time they confuse your dog and begin to merge in your dogs mind, There’s also no point, you have years with your dog why bothering trying to cram it into a few weeks.

All About Dog Carriers

You may know that there are clothing items for dogs, leashes, collars, and several thousands of toys, but did you know there are actually small dog carriers that allow you to carry your dog like a baby? We will not only be going into the types of dog carriers that are available in shops, but we will also go into whether these carriers are actually a good idea.

Dogs, even small dogs need to have several minutes of exercise a day to remain healthy. There are some small dog breeds that can actual become overweight because they are not as energetic as other breeds and they tend to over eat. When you are talking about taking proper care of your dog there are several things to consider. Every dog needs to have at least fifteen minutes of walking every day to remain healthy. Larger dogs tend to need about two hours of exercise to stay healthy. If you own a small dog you may wish to invest in a pet carrier that allows you to travel with the dog, rather than have them walk. In my opinion dog carriers are okay, if they are not used every time. It is okay for your dog to walk for fifteen minutes and then get a rest in the carrier. You should never carry them every where they go. It is true that some small dog breeds can get heatstroke or become extremely overtaxed by making them walk a lot. So it is always good to have either a stop during your travels or carry them for a little while.

Dog carriers can be a good accessory if you plan on going on a long walk, shopping, or on vacation where you will be walking a lot. The dog carriers are designed to help your pet get the exercise they need, without over taxing them. They are also designed to allow you to take your dog to more places without fear of over walking them. You have a few different designs to choose from in dog carriers. The first style is actually like a dog stroller. This stroller allows you to wheel the dog along, and provides enough of a rim that they cannot just jump out. In this instance you don’t have to have a leash on them all the time. It also gives them a break from walking long distances.

The next style of dog carriers are the medium leg carriers for small dogs. Some dogs have a little bit thicker leg because they are short. This type of carrier is worn like a snuggly for babies. It is a front carrier that offers shoulder padding and the dog to face out and watch the world. It also lets you bond with the dog. Again while it can help during your long walks, don’t use it every time. Part of dog care is allowing the dog to get the exercise they need. The other style of dog carriers is the small legs for a slimmer pet. This is the same front style carrier as the medium leg carrier.

Dog carriers for small pets can save your dog from becoming overtaxed. You should also realize that your dog does need some alone time. They need to be able to expound energy, have time to them, and to seek affection when they want it. If you are going to use a dog carrier keep in mind that part of dog care is to make sure the dog has what it needs rather than the owner.

The Best Dog Breeds for Children Part 2

In the first article we spoke about dog breeds that are good with children and some dog breeds that are not always the best choice. In this article we will add a few more dogs to both lists, but we will also delve into what you should be looking for in a dog if you have children. Children are very impressionable and they can have a bad experience with a dog at a young age and never like dogs. To this end I hope to provide information that will help you choose the right dog for your family to make it complete.

First it is important that the child be old enough to handle a dog around the house if you are looking to purchase a dog now that you have children. Some individuals have dogs prior to children and they can become jealous, or they may have issues with the child being rough on their tails or body. So if you have children that are in the toddler stage you may want to think about a few things first. There are lovable dogs that are quite hardy. They don’t mind being pulled on or picked on by children, but most often you will find seventy percent of dog breeds do not tolerate what they consider abuse. It is best to wait until the child is old enough to understand right from wrong. If the child understands that pulling hair or a tail will cause pain you can help the interactions of pet and child better than a child that doesn’t really understand why the dog keeps running away.

The care of the dog is another concern. Many adults believe that a child of about seven or eight should have a dog or other pet to take care of. They are learning about the needs of someone else and having someone else depend on them. This is a great age to introduce a dog if you want one to be apart of the family and allow the child to help in the care. If you are a family that has a lot of after school and weekend activities, as well as two parents who work all day the dog may suffer in care. With dogs you need a family that will be able to have a routine for the dog, walks both in the morning and evening, and of course some play time.

Once you have established if you have time for the dog, who is going to care for the dog the most, and if your children are the appropriate age for a new pet you can begin selecting from the several dog breeds out there. One of the best dogs to have in a household with kids is the dachshund. The dachshund is a small dog that weighs much the same as a cat. This type of dog can tolerate the younger generation a lot more than others because of their personality. They tend to be sensitive, but they enjoy affection from all sources. Another great dog to have is the Siberian husky. The husky is a very active dog, which means you have to be willing to spend a lot of time out doors, but they are also very affectionate and protective. They will take care of the child and are trainable. Some dogs tend to be a little clumsy when they are large like the Great Dane or Mastiff, but the husky is very aware of their body at all times. The mastiff is another dog that can go either way with children. They can be clumsy or unaware of their size even after sufficient training. This means they can potentially harm a child by just being a large dog. They are very affectionate and friendly so you may take that into account before saying "no" to this breed.
